I took both kids to the Dundas Cactus Festival for the first time. Never been, had no idea what to expect. We stumbled onto a dog show doing tricks first, and by the time we hit King Street the whole thing was closed off for the festival, inflatables on one side, vendors on the other, a couple of stages running through the middle.
The inflatables were a hit except Riri isn't quite big enough for most of them, so she was stuck putting balls in a hole while the older kids bounced around her. Not a big deal, just what was there. Face painting, a rock climbing wall, a five minute escape room with a line long enough that I didn't bother, because you try standing in a lineup with a two-year-old and a nine-year-old and let me know how that goes.
The vendor side was the real surprise. Mostly local businesses, a few political booths (MPs, mayoral candidates, doing their thing), a corporate tent or two like BMW, the usual fair food. And lemonade stands, everywhere. I've seen how easy it is to start one of these online and apparently half of Dundas has too.
What got me was the art side. Local artists selling gems, jewelry, clothes, treats, real side hustles out in the open. Two things I love seeing, art and small unique businesses. It's easy to forget how many people around here are quietly building something on the weekends. Missed the BMX show, they weren't running when we came through, next year maybe.
Kids had their side of the street, we had ours. Nobody cried, nobody got lost. Good day.
